About Us

In late 1964, siblings Bonifacia Gomez and Emilio & Nieves Garza saw a need for a place of worship for the many Mexican immigrant families that had began to reside in the city of McFarland.  The small group began gathering for services at a residence on the East side of town at 156 San Lucas St.  The group saw a need for a Minster to lead them so after much prayer, Bonifacia contacted her nephew, Zenaido Garza, a recent Bible school graduate.  She brought him to be their Pastor in April of 1965 and El Buen Pastor Church was officially founded.

They continued to congregate at the residence until they outgrew the place and the neighbors began to complain of the noise.  In 1966, they moved down the block and began to rent the building at 279 San Lucas St. which is now Ranchito Market.  Then in 1968, the were blessed to buy their own church building at 284 San Juan Street which served as their Place of Worship for many years.  As the EBPC congregation grew, the building no longer could house them and through a series of miracles and divine providence, they were able to purchase another church building and 3 acres at 700 W. Sherwood Ave. in 1975.

In 1978, stepping out in faith, Rev. Zenaido & Pilar Garza and the congregation of EBPC broke ground on those 3 acres and constructed a new sanctuary.  In 1979, the congregation joyously marched from the old church at San Juan St. to their beautiful new place of worship at 700 W. Sherwood Ave.

In late 80s, the church was able to purchase 25 acres adjacent to their property and in 2002 built new Christian Education Facilities.

We have seen throughout the years the hand of God on His people through the blessings He has bestowed on El Buen Pastor Church. We will continue to do our best to better the community of McFarland with God’s help.
